Google Ad Call Extension & Call Reporting

Hello everyone! Recently over the last few weeks, I've noticed that Google call extensions seems to be disapproved. It seems like they start scraping your website to find the number as validation, but that's not too possible because of tracking numbers. Anyone else bump into this issue?

Separately, are there issues when you turn on "Call Reporting" in Google Ads? I read somewhere that we should turn those off now, but I'm not certain.

I appreciate any clarity on these!

    We do have a help article that goes into detail about verifying your call extension numbers with Google. In summary, Google provides two ways to verify your call extension phone numbers:

    1. Ensure the phone number used in your extension appears in text on the website featured in your ad.

    2. Prove that you own your domain by linking your Google Search Console to your Google Ads accounts. You can also add your unique Google Ads conversion tracking code snippet to the landing page featured in your ad if you prefer to verify ownership of your domain without using Google Search Console. 

    The easiest way to verify CallRail phone numbers is to prove ownership of your ad's display URL by linking your Google Ads and Google Search Console account. Google recommends option 2 if you’re using third-party call tracking services like CallRail.

    As for your second question, if you are using the Google Ads Call Details Forwarding integration to track calls to your Google Extension numbers, you will want to keep that call reporting turned on in your Google Ads account. However, if you are not using that integration, you will want to make sure call reporting within Google Ads is turned off. This could result in duplicate reporting if left on.

  • @..., do you know if CallRail has a preference on using 'Call Detail Forwarding' vs. the Google Ads Mobile integration? They both report data as conversions to Google Ads, and both seem to allow for keyword level tracking. I'm not sure which I should enable since it's an either/or.

    We suggest using the Call Detail Forwarding (CDF) integration to track calls to your extension numbers. Using both will result in duplicate tracking. The CDF integration tracks all calls to your Google extension numbers and not just those that were "click-to-call."
