Google Ads manual conversion import

CallRail offers two methods to report calls and forms as conversions to Google Ads. Our recommended method is to use our direct integration:
CallRail's Integration with Google Ads.

As an alternative, we offer Google Ads Manual Conversion Import for situations where you need to backfill any conversion data that may have been missed when the integration was inactive. CallRail's Ads Manual Conversion Import reports conversions for calls and forms that included a Google Ads click (gclid) within the past 90 days.

CallRail's Google Ads integration requirements

In order to manually import calls to Google Ads, you'll need to have the following set up:

  • Visitor-level call tracking.
  • Auto-tagging enabled in your Google Ads account.

In order to manually import forms submissions to Google Ads, you'll also need:

  • An active Google Ads Integration.
  • The Send form submissions as conversions option must be checked on the Google Ads integration page in CallRail. Check out this support article to learn how.
  • The form submission must have a gclid attached. If it doesn’t, it will not be included in this export.

Note: Conversions can take 24 hours to appear within your Google Ads account. Additionally, once manually uploaded, conversions can't be deleted.

Manually import conversions

Each company has its own spreadsheet of Google Ad click IDs. Use the instructions below for each company in your account where you'd like to manually import your conversions to Google Ads.

  1. Select the Integrations icon on the left navigation bar.
  2. Select Google Ads from the list of integrations.
  3. Choose the company where you’d like to set up this integration.
  4. Under Manual Import via CSV on the right side of the page, select the link to download this CSV file.
Please note: The file will be emailed to the email address of the user who clicked on the download link for this CSV file.
  5. Log in to your Google Ads account.
  6. In Google Ads, select Tools and Settings at the top of the page.

  11. Google's documentation recommends waiting at least 3 hours to see your imported conversions in your Google Ads account. To learn more about how to see your conversions in Google Ads, use this help article.

How to adjust or remove a conversion

From time to time, customers may need to remove conversions posted by the integration or potentially adjust them to add, change, or remove the conversion value.

  1. In CallRail, navigate to Settings -> Integrations -> Google Ads.
  2. On the right side of the screen, you will see a box titled "Manual import via spreadsheet." Download the Excel file linked in this section.
  3. Open this sheet to edit it.
  4. Delete rows for any calls you do not want to adjust or remove. This will leave only what needs to be changed and avoid impacting correct conversions.
  5. Copy conversion name(s), gclids, and timestamps into Google's conversion adjustment template. The template can be downloaded from this Google help center page.
    • If the monetary value associated with the conversion needs to be adjusted, set the adjustment type as "RESTATE" and add the adjusted value and currency to the appropriate columns.
    • If you need to remove a conversion, set the adjustment type to "RETRACT."
    • For either adjustment type, include the time the adjustment was made. This article from Google lists the supported date and time formats. Please note: the date should not be in the future and must be after the conversion date/time.
  6. Once finished, upload the prepared sheet to Google as described here.

FAQs

If there are conversions present in the manual import that are already in Google Ads, will there be duplicate conversions?

The manual conversion import will skip any conversion with the same gclid, timestamp, and conversion action name already posted. However, if you are using Google Call Details Forwarding (CDF), any already-posted conversions from ad extension calls will be included in the manual import sheet, resulting in duplicate conversions. To prevent these duplicate conversions, remove any ad extension calls from the manual import sheet before uploading, or create an integration trigger to filter out CDF calls.
