CallRail's attribution reporting shows you which marketing sources, campaigns, and channels deserve credit for your calls, texts, and form submissions. This lets you prove which marketing efforts are working, compare channels fairly, and calculate an accurate cost per lead, all using the model that matches how you think about your sales funnel.
With Last Touch Attribution, you can also see what brought an existing lead back to you, not just what brought them to you the very first time.
Understanding Attribution Milestones
Before choosing an attribution model, it helps to understand the three milestones CallRail tracks in a lead's journey:
- First Touch: the first time a customer engages with your company, for example, clicking a PPC ad or being called by your sales team. First Touch doesn't populate until a customer calls, texts, or submits a form (outbound calls are the one exception).
- Lead Creation: the last touchpoint before a customer calls, texts, or submits a form and becomes known to your business as a raw lead (any lead that hasn't yet been qualified).
- Qualified: the last touchpoint before a customer becomes a qualified lead, whether scored manually, through Keypad Scoring, or through Automation Rules.
These milestones can overlap. If a customer sees a PPC ad and immediately calls the number on it, that single event is both their First Touch and their Lead Creation milestone.
The Five Attribution Models
CallRail weighs the milestones above differently depending on which of the five models you choose:
| Model | Credit Assignment |
|---|---|
| First Touch Model | 100% credit to the first touchpoint |
| Lead Creation Model | 100% credit to the last touchpoint before becoming a raw lead |
| 50/50 Model | Credit is split evenly between First Touch and Lead Creation (the default model on most reports) |
| Qualified Model | 100% credit to the last touchpoint before becoming a qualified lead |
| W-Shaped Model | Credit split evenly across First Touch, Lead Creation, and Qualified, one-third each |
You can choose your attribution model from the Attribution dropdown on supported reports, including the Lead Attribution Report and Multi-Touch Cost per Lead.
How cost per lead is calculated: the cost of a marketing effort divided by the number of leads equals cost per lead. Under a multi-touch model like 50/50 or W-Shaped, each touchpoint only earns partial credit toward a lead (0.5 credit each under 50/50, for example), so your total lead count, and therefore your cost per lead, will differ from what you'd see under a single-touch model like First Touch.
Last Touch Attribution
Last Touch Attribution shows the most recent source or campaign associated with a lead, updating every time that lead reaches out again. It isn't a sixth attribution model alongside the five above; think of it instead as the other bookend of the journey. First Touch tells you how a lead found you the very first time. Last Touch tells you what got them to reach out this time.
This matters most for repeat callers. Say a lead first called you 18 months ago after seeing a Facebook ad, then calls again today after clicking a Google ad. Under First Touch alone, that Google ad gets no credit for the new call, even though it's what drove the action. With Last Touch, you can see both: how the lead originally found you, and what brought them back.
There's no plan or add-on requirement to use Last Touch Attribution. It's available on every plan, for every account.
Last Touch is additive: turning it on doesn't change how First Touch or any of your existing attribution models calculate. You're simply adding a second, continuously updating data point alongside the models you already use.
Add Last Touch to Your Reports and Call Log
Last Touch appears in three places in CallRail:
- In the Call Log, click Edit Columns and add the First Touch and Last Touch columns. Neither column is shown by default.
- In the Lead Attribution Report, open the attribution model dropdown and select Last Touch Attribution, listed after First Touch Attribution.
- On a lead's Timeline, open the Lead Journey Overview to see the Last Touch milestone displayed alongside First Touch and Lead Created.
Last Touch data is also included when you export the Call Log or Lead Attribution Report.
How Last Touch Updates
Lead Creation is set once and never changes. Last Touch updates every time a lead engages with you again, so it always reflects the most recent touchpoint, no matter how long it's been since their first contact.
How CallRail Determines Your Marketing Source
Before any interaction can be scored against an attribution model, CallRail must first determine where it came from.
For interactions tied to a web session (a call or text to a website pool, a form submission, or a chat), CallRail first determines the source network, for example, that Google or Facebook served an ad or organic result, then checks whether that traffic was paid or organic.
For interactions without a web session (calls or texts to a source tracking number), CallRail relies on that number's own source-level tracking settings instead.
CallRail primarily reads UTM parameters in the URL (starting with utm_source=) and, where available, click IDs issued by ad networks, like gclid for Google Ads. Sources CallRail automatically attributes include Google, Bing, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Yelp, NextDoor, Twitter, LinkedIn, Spotify, DuckDuckGo, Pinterest, SearchGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. If none of these match and no usable UTM parameter is found, CallRail defaults to Direct or the referring domain, if one is available.
Session-level attribution in practice: with a website pool, CallRail can track a visitor across multiple separate visits, not just their most recent one, so you can see an entire path, for example, a first Google Ads click, an organic visit two days later, and a retargeting ad on a third visit, on the caller's Timeline and in the Call Attribution report. A source tracking number, by contrast, has no session data behind it, so it can only ever show the single touchpoint that led to that specific interaction. This is why, for source tracking, First Touch and Lead Creation are always the same event.
Last Touch works differently here. Because Last Touch simply reflects the most recent touchpoint that reached your business, it updates on repeat engagements regardless of tracking type. A website pool adds visibility into the path a lead took within a single visit, but it isn't required for Last Touch itself to move. For example, if a repeat caller reaches a source-tracking number tied to a Google Ads campaign, Last Touch updates to Google Ads even though that number has no session history.
Self-Reported Attribution
Self-Reported Attribution captures a customer's own answer to "How did you hear about us?", either from call transcript analysis (requires Premium Conversation Intelligence) or a dedicated form field (requires Form Tracking with Custom Forms enabled). It's a first-party signal that can surface sources your other tracking might miss, like personal referrals or offline advertising. Self-Reported Attribution is additive: it appears alongside your existing marketing attribution and doesn't change how CallRail calculates or reports it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between First Touch and Last Touch?
First Touch is the source that first brought a lead to you. It's set once and never changes. Last Touch is the most recently associated source for that lead's interactions, and it updates every time they engage again.
Does Last Touch replace or change my First Touch reporting?
No. First Touch attribution is unchanged. Last Touch is additive: you opt in by adding the column or selecting the filter, and your existing reports and models continue to work exactly as before.
I already use the API to pull Last Touch data. Does this replace that?
No. This surfaces the same data natively in the platform, so a custom export isn't necessary, but your API access is unchanged.
Is Last Touch Attribution available on my plan?
Yes. Last Touch Attribution is available on every plan, for every account, with no add-on required.
Does Last Touch require a website pool to work?
No. Last Touch updates on repeat engagement regardless of tracking type. A website pool provides additional visibility into a lead's path during a single visit, but it isn't required for Last Touch to update. Even a source tracking number with no session history will update Last Touch when a repeat interaction comes through it.
Can I export Last Touch data?
Yes. Last Touch is included when you export the Call Log or the Lead Attribution Report.
What's the difference between Last Touch and the Lead Creation model?
Lead Creation is set once, at the moment a lead first becomes known to your business, and never changes afterward. Last Touch updates every time the same lead reaches out, so it always reflects their most recent interaction rather than a single fixed moment.
