Create a number to track a web referral

You can use a CallRail tracking number to track website visitors from specific third-party websites. This type of tracking number is commonly used to track website visitors from directory listings like Yelp or Yellow Pages.

A member of our team will need to update your account first to create tracking numbers for countries outside the United States and Canada. Read this article to learn more about call tracking in your country.

Getting started

In order for your web referral tracking number to swap as expected, your company's JavaScript snippet will need to be installed on each page of your website to enable dynamic number insertion.

If you are currently using visitor tracking to "Track All Visitors," then your website pool will track all of your web referrals without having to create a number.

Create a web referral tracking number

Follow these steps to create a tracking number for each referral domain you'd like to track.

  1. Select the Create (+) icon in the navigation bar on the left and select Phone Number.
  2. Choose the company where you'd like to add your new tracking number.
  3. The new number wizard will appear on your screen. The first question asks, "Where do you want to use this tracking number?" Select On my website since this tracking number will dynamically replace the telephone number on your website.
  4. Select Calls only since this number will track referrals instead of keywords or web sessions.
  5. On the next screen Web referrals as your tracking source, and enter the website domain you'd like to track. Then, select Number Setup.
  6. Name your tracking number for your reports and settings. Then, choose the call tracking phone number you'd like to purchase by picking from one of the three options for local and toll-free numbers. Once you've picked your number, select Number routing to move to the next step.

  7. Choose the call tracking phone number you'd like to purchase (local, area code-specific, or toll-free) and name the number in CallRail. Then select Number routing to move forward. You can also configure your whisper message and call recording. When you're finished, select Activate Tracking Number.
  8. To purchase an Australian or UK tracking number, please provide an address to associate with it. This address does not have to be local and can be your business's main address.
  9. Once you've completed the number creation process, you can choose one of the suggested next steps to configure your new tracking number further, or Go to Activity Dashboard to close the number creation wizard.
